Living on a tropical island, we are constantly surrounded by beautiful shells that wash up from the depths of the ocean onto the beaches around us, but did you know that shells were once used as "currency" in the world?
In Africa they were used in trade well up until the mid 19th Century. Shells were fashioned into a necklace or a bracelet in strings and represented collective dollars. Over three thousand years ago the 'cowry' shell was used as currency in China too. (that's the little one that looks like a mouth), but most importantly of all, is how shells were used here, between the islands of Indonesia. They were broken into flakes and the flakes became coins. These flakes had holes bored through them and then placed onto strings too so they became groups of coins and valued in bunches.
We created this beautiful charm bracelet in memory to the islands and added the single bright white freshwater pearl that comes from a neighboring island called Lombok, famous for it's pearl farms. We finished off the design with our signature logo and fob fastening.
